Drops once. Holds where the loud water quits.
Anchor accepts one assignment: arrive at the bottom and make further travel inconvenient. The ring takes the chain. The arms take the seabed. Everything above may argue with weather; down here, the procedure is already complete.
Before dawn, Anchor is lowered past the tidy reflections and the fish with opinions. It does not inspect the harbor. It finds one unremarkable patch of ground, settles its flukes, and becomes the reason a much larger vessel stays exactly where it was left. By breakfast, everyone credits the rope.
Stay put. Let the surface explain itself.
